Hogs and hazelnuts: adaptively managing pest spillover in the agricultural-wildland matrix

چکیده

Pest spillover from wildlands to farms can create conflict between habitat conservation and agricultural production. For example, the key economic pest of hazelnuts in Oregon’s Willamette Valley is filbertworm (Cydia latiferreana), a moth hosted by native Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana). Oak near hazelnut orchards sustain source populations that compound load throughout growing season. This dynamic conservational concern as historical has been greatly reduced what remains almost entirely on private land, often proximity orchards. Here, we present novel strategy reconcile this regional using hogs (Sus domesticus) reduce through prescribed foraging. From 2018 2020 hog-foraging early fall glean filbertworm-infested acorns an woodland understory. Hogs were both highly successful at reducing total number infested ratio following year. Despite oak-masting year 2019, foraging emerging adult mating population We did not measure significant changes understory, suggesting intermittent may entail tradeoffs for understory vegetation. Our results demonstrate patches be effective populations. By benefiting farmers, adaptive management approach provides model similar challenges conflicts across agricultural-wildland matrix.

Carnivore Use of Avocado Orchards across an Agricultural-Wildland Gradient

Wide-ranging species cannot persist in reserves alone. Consequently, there is growing interest in the conservation value of agricultural lands that separate or buffer natural areas. The value of agricultural lands for wildlife habitat and connectivity varies as a function of the crop type and landscape context, and quantifying these differences will improve our ability to manage these lands mor...
